Location: Sun safety Why bother with extra protective sun clothing for your baby? You're careful as it is, not letting your baby play outside during the hottest part of the day, you put plenty of sun cream on him and a bit of sun is good for your child... Well, yes you're thinking along the right lines but the effect of sun cream is relatively short-lived (depending on it's strength and baby's natural skin pigmentation) and has the habit of rubbing off when in combination with water and sand. And did you know that UV rays are quadrupled by the reflection of the rays from the water and light-coloured sand? Not to mention the increasing intensity of UV rays due to ozone depletion... Your baby's immune system and his skin already suffer when slight reddening occurs. And research shows that getting sunburned twice as a child increases the risk of suffering from skin cancer later on in life. These are obviously not things we think about when we let our children play outside because when we were children ourselves the problem wasn't yet recognized... The sun safety textiles presented here have UPF 50+ protection which means excellent protection according to the Australian UV protection standard for dry, non-stretched and new textiles. However, when your child is playing in water, stretching the material and the clothes have already been exposed to chlorine or salt from the water, then an additional safety level needs to be applied. This is called UV standard 801 and these products have been designed to also meet these. Microfibre is used in the manufacture of these clothes which dry quickly, are soft on the skin, allowing it to 'breathe' naturally. The cut has been especially designed to allow easy and comfortable moving. So when you're baby is covered in wet sand, don't worry, just wipe him down with a towl. The clothes will quickly dry on him and he'll continue to be UV protected whilst you pack up everything and take him home for his bath.
